IIT-Kanpur 56th Convocation: Doctorate degree to Mary Kom, 2127 students receives degrees
Graduating students at IIT Kanpur can obtain their digital degrees through the institute’s internal blockchain technology application, guaranteeing that the degree certificates are both memorable and globally verifiable. These digital degrees also offer the option for selective disclosure and are designed to be sensitive to user content.
During IIT-Kanpur’s 56th convocation, a diverse range of degree programs were awarded to a total of 2,127 students. These programs included 236 PhDs, 15 joint MTech-PhDs, 483 MTechs, 739 BTechs, 21 MBAs, 16 MDes, 51 MS (by Research), 40 PGPEX-VLFM, 1 DIIT (Diploma of IIT), 151 MSc (2-year course), 18 Double Majors, 125 Dual Degrees, 14 MS-PDs (MS part of the Dual Degree), 149 BSs, and 68 eMasters degrees.
The convocation also recognized notable individuals with the esteemed Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree. This highest honorary academic degree was awarded to MC Mary Kom, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, and Natarajan Chandrasekaran for their exceptional accomplishments.
Prof Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur, extended his congratulations to the graduating class and wished them success in their future endeavors. The chief guest, NR Narayana Murthy, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, emphasized the significance of transcending affiliations and embracing one’s Indian identity. He also stressed the importance of creating an inclusive India with accessible education, healthcare, and opportunities for all children.

Outstanding students from various fields were recognized during the convocation ceremony. Farzan Adil Byramji from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) received the prestigious President’s Gold Medal. Ananya Gupta from CSE was honored with the Director’s Gold Medal for the 4-year undergraduate program, while Lakshay Rastogi from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) was awarded the Director’s Gold Medal for the 5-year undergraduate program.
Furthermore, Nandita Gupta from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) received the esteemed Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize, and Vineeth V from the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) was presented with the prestigious Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Medal.
