UPSC Civil Services exam twice a year? Experts discuss challenges and benefits
According to experts, there are two proposed approaches to address this issue. One option is to decrease the syllabus, while the other involves expediting the interview process within a month by increasing the number of interview panels conducted each day.
Currently, the Civil Services recruitment cycle conducted by the UPSC takes approximately 14-15 months to complete. The recruitment process consists of three stages: prelims, main examination, and personality test. If a candidate fails at any stage, they are required to reappear for the preliminary exam in the following year.
A recent Parliamentary Committee has criticized the lengthy recruitment period and recommended that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) shorten the UPSC CSE cycle. The committee believes that recruitment examinations should ideally be completed within six months, as extended recruitment cycles not only waste valuable years of candidates’ lives but also have detrimental effects on their physical and mental well-being. The committee’s report emphasizes the need for UPSC to take significant measures to reduce the duration of the recruitment cycle while maintaining the quality of the process.
